Best Watches Under $500

Here are some great new watch releases from 2013 that come in at under $500.  We’re looking for accurate Swiss or Japanese quartz movements; hardened mineral glass or sapphire crystals; stainless-steel cases with screw-in casebacks or backs held with four to six screws; firm but smooth crown actuation (hoping for screw-down crowns); bracelets with folding safety clasps and push button releases; and a two-year warranty.

Jack Spade Dual Time

The Dual Time features a stainless-steel case and bracelet, sapphire crystal and a Swiss-made Ronda movement. The caseback is screwed in, helping ensure 10 ATM of water resistance. This is a dual time-zone watch, and has two crowns -- one for adjusting the watch and one for rotating the inner bezel -- which feature the second time zone in 24-hour format (the second time zone is indicated with a fourth hand). The Dual Time is a brightly colored watch with navy blue dial and a bi-color rotating inner bezel in orange and white. Yellow and blue inlay on the crowns complete the color palette.

Swatch SCUBA Libre

Nope, that price isn’t a misprint. This new collection from Swatch follows in its tradition of colorful, inexpensive watches executed in plastic. The SCUBA Libre features an updated classic dive watch style, and, yes, the bezels rotate. Swiss ETA movements all around, and the 44-millimeter cases are good to 20 bar (660 feet of depth). Plastic or textile straps, depending on the model you select, complete the look. There are two skeleton models, and while quartz movements aren’t as interesting to look at as their mechanical forefathers, you’ll still have some gears and such to peer at.

Gucci Sync

The Gucci Sync is a great-looking sport watch with a men’s model with a great sport-jogger-meets-Urban-Saturday-night look. The 46-millimeter stainless-steel case features a mineral glass crystal and integral rubber strap, and is water resistant to 50 meters. A Swiss quartz movement is tucked safe inside.

Vittorium Deep Diver REF DD360300

After a while, all dive watches begin to look the same. Here’s something a little different, and you still get a Swiss-made watch. This is a big boy with a 47-millimeter, 316L stainless steel case on a rubber strap. There’s the requisite rotating bezel, an ETA quartz movement and sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. A cool touch is the carbon-fiber dial. No word on screw-down crown or screw-in back, but the watch is rated to 200 meters depth water resistance.

Casio Edifice Twin Sensor ERA 200B

The Edifice Twin Sensor is an auto-racing-oriented version of the Edifice. This is another big watch, guys -- 46.5 millimeters. Who said big watches were dead? Stainless-steel case with a water resistance rating of 100 meters, mounted on your choice of stainless-steel bracelet or rubber strap. The movement is a Casio in-house caliber and features a 1/100th of a second stopwatch, thermometer, digital compass, world time in 29 time zones, a perpetual calendar (to 2099) and five -- count ‘em -- alarms.

ArmourLite AL-217 Men's Watch

The CGA Company has a history of carrying solid guy watches with a decidedly tactical look and function. The all-black ArmourLite AL-217 follows in that tradition. The case and bracelet are PVD (physical vapor deposition)-coated stainless steel. The crystal is hardened mineral glass, which CGA calls shatterproof. The ArmourLite features a Swiss-made Ronda quartz movement, held in a 45-millimeter case with a screw-in case back and double O-ring sealed screw-down crown. The hands feature small vials of Tritium, an extremely luminous compound. No worries about reading this guy in the dark.

Anstead Oceanis

Update on the Anstead Oceanis: After wearing the Oceanis off and on for the better part of a month, we can report that this watch has delivered. It’s comfortable despite its size (44 millimeters), with either leather or rubber strap, and it’s extremely readable (although if you’re on a mission where seconds count, we’re still concerned about the mostly black sweep second hand). We’ve been assured the issue with the very stiff uni-directional rotating bezel is being addressed in future production pieces. We have to say, all in all, this one’s recommended for an excellent everyday timepiece -- from missions to the home center to casual daytime and date-night wear.

'Full House' Returns To Television With A Reunion Series Thanks To Netflix

Netflix has been doing an awesome job of bringing back our favorite TV shows and we're not just talking about the reruns of Cheers and Coach. They've also revived shows that fans have been clamoring for again with entirely new seasons like Arrested Development and a new sketch show for Mr. Show's Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Now they just announced that they are bringing back a show with one of the biggest cult followings in TV history.
Netflix announced that they are creating a spinoff series for Full House called (wait for it) Fuller House. The show will focus on the modern lives of DJ and Kimmy, played respectively by Candace Cameron Bure and Andrea Barber presumably as moms in the modern sitcom world. The show will also feature appearances and cameos by some of the show's principal stars including John Stamos, Dave Coulier and even Bob Saget. The latest news reports didn't say if Jodie Sweetin or either of the Olsen Twins would appear although we assume that the Twins could only play ghosts of their former selves given how pale and rail thin they've become since the original series.
The show's cast and creators have been trying to do a revival for a long time and the closest we've ever come is a hilarious reunion on Jimmy Fallon's show. Netflix is the perfect place to house it since it can't be cancelled mid-season by a group of careless TV executives who don't know what their audience wants from them. If they did, they never would have cancelled Full House in the first place.
Wondering what the original cast will look like in the series? Most recently the cast was together for Dave Coulier's wedding in Colorado with most of the clan in attendance including the show's creator Jeff Franklin. Regardless, let's hope for the best on this one.

Someone Made A Life-sized Benedict Cumberbatch Out Of 500 Chocolate Bars

If you are a lady looking for a dead sexy fella and also want to still indulge in some fine Belgian chocolate, we may have found your man. In order to celebrate the launch of a new drama TV network, UKTV created a contest polling over 2,000 women on who they thought was the “dishiest dramatic actor on UK TV.” Turns out it is Benedict Cumberbatch. Weird, I would have gone with Rowan Atkinson as the
I wish more humans were made out of chocolate.
They then commissioned a team of eight sculptors and chocolatiers to create a solid chocolate, life sized replica of the Sherlock star.  Using 500 melted bars of premium Belgian chocolate, “Benedict Chocobatch” as they are calling him stands 6 feet tall and weighs 88 pounds. Just don’t leave him out in the sun for too long or it’s going to be Benedict Puddlebatch.

City rehires lifeguards fired for 'Gangnam Style' spoof

swimming pool, the San Gabriel Valley News reports. They were fired last month from the El Monte Aquatic Center for what the city said was unauthorized use of city resources for their own personal benefit, the newspaper says.
The lifeguards say the video spoofing Korean rapper PSY was made while they were off-duty. It shows lifeguards in city-issued swimsuits dancing underwater and on diving boards at the center.
The controversy, however, is also caught up in allegations by former workers of nepotism and poor management at the Aquatic Center.

Horror Movies We're Looking Forward to in 2015

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
March 13, 2015
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

The Paranormal Activity franchise helped to reinvigorate found footage films in 2007. Since then a number of sequels have followed, and while not every installment has won huge with viewers, a number of these creep-outs have served to thrill viewers. Enter Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, the sixth film in the franchise. Gregory Plotkin will make his directorial debut, and look to reinject major interest in a generally successful franchise.

Insidious: Chapter 3

Insidious Chapter 3

The Insidious pictures stole the hearts of fans immediately. They're creepy, loaded with gloom and dreadful atmosphere and jam-packed with shocking visuals. A third film was a no-brainer, and with Leigh Whannell (a key player in the entire franchise) directing, it's probably safe to anticipate one terrifying feature.

Poltergeist

Poltergeist

Here's one of next year's greatest question marks. Can the Poltergeist remake hold a candle to the original pic? My gut says yes! Gil Kenan, who directed the gorgeously chilling Monster House takes to the helm, and he's got some top notch performers to work with. From Sam Rockwell to Rosemarie Dewitt to Jared Harris, it's almost impossible to imagine this remake underwhelming on any level.

Goosebumps

Goosebumps

Look for Goosebumps to be as much comedy as it is horror, but look for it to tap nostalgic nerves around the globe as well. R.L. Stine's series remains one of the most popular runs for the young, and there's no reason to believe that infectious entertainment won't transfer well to the big screen. This could be the film that sees Jack Black return to top form.

Sinister 2

Sinister 2

Sinister was a frightening film. Ciaron Foy will take over directorial duties for this sequel, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The fact is, there's a great foundation to build upon here. Scott Derrickson's inaugural franchise film was quite moving, and it should be compelling to see the direction Foy takes this sequel.

Frankenstein

Frankenstein

Daniel Radcliffe can't be stopped. He transitioned from the Harry Potter films to the surprisingly impressive adaptation of Joe Hill's amazing novel Horns, and now he's right back at it in the new Frankenstein film. Radcliffe will portray Igor, and the majority of us are extremely excited. This one doesn't look to be another Universal action-oriented flick, but something a bit darker. It's a shame we'll be forced to wait until next October to take this one in, but the wait could very well be worth it!

The Last Wiitch Hunter

The Last Witch Hunter

Vin Diesel will front Breck Eisner's new action/horror hybrid, The Last Witch Hunter. Early imagery looks awesome, and Vin has a knack for taking the reigns and outshining his cast mates. It won't be easy with talents like Elijah Wood and Michael Caine on board, but it's possible. And even if Diesel fails to emerge the star, he's got great onscreen company and a really cool man versus witch concept to juggle.
